The Liberty wreck, Tulamben, Bali, is a world class shore dive. Just about thirty meters from a shore of lava rocks and 5 meters to 30 meters below is the sunken remains of a World War II freighter – the USAT Liberty. Seventy years ago the Liberty was shipping materials to Australia across the Lombok Straits and she was torpedoed by a Japanese U-boat. Taking on vast quantities of water, the Liberty was beached on Bali’s north eastern shore in Tulamben. A 1963 eruption of the Mount Agung volcano left the vessel in it’s present “just off shore” location, situated ideally for amazing marine life and adventurous divers.
